I have the pleasure of being active in three industries.

One is Christian publishing, in which I work as a writer and freelance editor. My first book, The Strategically Small Church, was a finalist in the 2010 Leadership Book Awards. My second book, Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes, co-authored with Randy Richards, was named a Hearts and Minds best-of for 2012. I have also written for Leadership, Christianity Today, Relevant, and the Out of Ur blog.

Another industry I work in is academics. I have a BA from Ouachita Baptist University, an MA from Wheaton College Graduate School, and a PhD in historical theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where I am on the editorial board for Trinity Journal. I actively publish and present academic papers in the field of early American religious history.

I also serve the local church through volunteer ministry and through encouraging and equipping pastors in their ministry. After several years in ministry myself, I am privileged now to support those God has called to lead his flock.

My favorite role is as husband to the beautiful and talented Amy O’Brien and father of James David.

My passion in writing and speaking is to bring these several spheres—Christian publishing, academics, ministry, and personal formation—into fruitful conversation.
